Tāwharanui Regional Park is a hidden gem located just a short drive north of Auckland.
Situated on a secluded peninsula, this stunning 588-hectare park offers some of the most stunning white sand beaches, shingled bays, rolling pastures, native coastal forest, and regenerating wetlands in the Auckland region. The park encompasses the Tāwharanui Open Sanctuary and the Tāwharanui Marine Reserve, which runs along the northern coast.
The park's name, Tāwharanui, translates to "the abundant edible bracts of the kiekie vine."
While you’re here, take a dip, catch some waves, or indulge in your favourite water sport such as kayaking, sailing, diving, snorkelling, or surfing. Anchor Bay is the perfect place to do so and enjoy a picnic on the clean white sand afterwards.
If you’re looking for something a bit more active, take a walk along the Ecology Trail (one of the most popular trails of Tāwharanui Regional Park) or explore the park by mountain bike. Head towards Tokatū Point or the North and South Coast Tracks for a moderate to difficult biking terrain and enjoy the stunning views.
If you prefer a more leisurely pace, pack your fishing gear, and try your luck on the south side of the peninsula. Please note that fishing is not allowed in the marine reserve on the north coast. For something unique, take a stroll through Waterfall Gully and witness the evening glow worm display.
For those looking to stay a bit longer, the park has several designated camping areas, including a beachfront campground with stunning ocean views. Camping here is a popular activity so bookings are essential during peak seasons.
