Te Komititanga is a public square at the harbour end of Queen Street in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Its name—gifted by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei—means “to mix” or “to merge” in te reo Māori, symbolising the meeting of cultures and the connection between Waitematā Harbour and Wai Horotiu stream.
Te Komititanga accommodates daily foot traffic in the tens of thousands and serves as a venue for events, celebrations, and civic gatherings. Its distinctive paving design features more than 137,000 basalt pavers forming a whāriki (welcome mat) that greets visitors to Tāmaki Makaurau.
Conveniently located adjacent to Waitematā Station, it’s just steps away from Auckland’s public transport hub. Find easy access whether you’re coming from near or far, with connections by train, bus, or even the Downtown ferry terminal right across the road. This prime location makes dropping by for an event or just exploring the space simple and stress-free.
For a spot of shopping, you don’t need to venture far — Commercial Bay sits right next to the square, offering a mix of fashion, dining and waterfront atmosphere. When it comes to great places to eat nearby, there’s no shortage of standout options. Kingi is a favourite for local, sustainably caught seafood, while Ortolana serves up a seasonal, European-inspired menu that’s perfect any time of day. The Nightcar adds a lively twist with its modern take on Chinese cuisine, alongside plenty more eateries waiting to be discovered as you wander the surrounding streets.
For drinks with a view, head upstairs to Queens Rooftop and Wineshop, where you’ll find some of the best harbour views in the area paired with excellent cocktails and a carefully curated wine list.
Whether you’re passing through, meeting friends, or exploring the city’s waterfront, Te Komititanga offers a vibrant gateway to the best of downtown Auckland.
